 Inadequate for mailing list September 29, 2008

I recently changed from a more-capable database to Apple's Address Book so that I could benefit from System X and iPhone integration. I have a custom field in Address Book called "codes" that has keys for sorting different groups of addresses for mailing. I was disappointed to find that Address Book can't search on the contents of specific fields. I hoped Bento would add the capability that I needed, but when I installed the demo version I found that Bento can't see custom fields in the Address Book file, and you can't do anything about it.

For anybody who needs a simple database program that is easy-to-use, Bento is fantastic. The integration with Address Book makes things so easy.

I am able to use the product, but it is not as flexible or adaptable as I would like it to have been. It would be nice to be able to 'link' from one record to another. It would be nice to be able to 'export' and 'import' 'Forms'. It would be nice to be able to construct or modify some of the multi-level 'Fields'. I would like more control over the font formatting. There are a number of impressive but useless capabilities such as the Format > Themes capability.
All in all, I found it relatively easy to use and would buy it again...

If you are a Mac user, have made the "Leopard Leap" (to Mac OS 10.5) and are looking for an easy to use database product with a simple and elegant interface, Bento is for you. Plus the price is certainly right! I downloaded the trial version and gave it a spin for about two weeks just to make sure it would be useful for our small, mom & pop business. I like the way it syncs with Address Book (the built-in application that comes with the Mac OS). I have read some complaints that you can't print address labels and such from Bento, but I don't find this to be a problem since you can print them from Address Book and all the information you have entered into Bento is there. If I was running a large company and needed database software, I would not recommend it, but it isn't made for that. Overall, for a "1.0" software product, I would say it was a very good buy.
