Freakin' Amazing, but... November 23, 2008 Sam (The Arizona Desert) Played Wasteland in the 80's on a Commodore 64. Played The lame sequel, Fountain of Something or Other. Played all the Fallouts. This is what I used to see in my head while sorting through the text dialogue combat of Wasteland. This is what I used to see in my head while Bloody Messing head-shots in the Fallout series. Only two little problems. 1. The difficulty in getting the game to run, well documented on the net, so no real need for discussion. Just to say a week of frustration and waiting. 2. You can't kill kids. In the earlier games, if you wanted to be so evil as to kill kids, you were allowed to, and your karma and reputation suffered. 3 does not allow it. A game this big, this open, the PC should be able to do (for good or evil) whatever comes to mind, and then live with the consequences. I am slightly miffed that Bethesda chose to make my PC that little bit PC.
The Future of Fallout November 23, 2008 Justin Rose (Georgia, USA) I'm a huge fan of Fallout 1, 2 and BoS. I'm also a huge fan of Bethesda, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion. If you like RPGs, or any of those, then buy this game. It's a perfect rendering of the FO universe in 3d. Keeps the same feel and texture. Buy it!
Another great Bethesda product November 23, 2008 Keith A. Cavey (Twentynine Palms, CA) Hundreds of hours of rich gameplay, which can vary immensely from one play to the next. Computer AI not the brightest (especially with allies), and inventory management is somewhat clunky, but these minor cons should not dissuade you from buying this excellent game.
A long wait... November 22, 2008 John J. Casey There are some minor bugs and issues with the game and there are some things I would have liked to have seen done differently but overall, it's worthy of the Fallout title. I hope they do some work on the engine and design in general for the next installment though... Mainly with the AI, scripting, content, etc...
Brilliant Game November 22, 2008 R. Brown This is a true classic and definitely lived up to the hype and expectation. By far the BEST in the FALLOUT series/universe. The environment is extremely immersive and the time flies by while playing. The graphics are very good but could be better when dealing with distance through a weapons scope. The movement of the NPC's is clunky and unrealistic but tolerable when you see the environment you are surrounded with. There are plenty of destroyable objects scattered across the landscape and the plot can twist into multiple outcomes based on earlier decisions.
Well done!!!
Graphics = great scenery, detail, terrain, explosions, and images. They definitely nailed the 50's style with animations, PIP Boy, Nuka-Cola, vehicles, and all post war technology. Very imaginative and highly creative! The water is beautiful on the surface but buggy when going to and from submersion.
Sound: I loved the 50's music playing on the radios and I think the sound effects are top notch. The only complaint I have is the lack of variety in the songs playing. There are plenty but you tire of them after about 10 hours of game play. I think the best song choice that makes the downtown DC wreckage just stew with realism and effect is the "I don't want to set the world on fire..." Try standing on the wreckage of a building and looking out over the city with the sun setting. Amazing!
Game play: Great combination of RPG and FPS. I love the ability to think strategically like an RPG (earlier versions of Fallout) but the environment, POV, interaction of an FPS. NPC's were the weakest point in the game. They don't move realistically over the terrain and stand out as being from a different game because they do not match the level of realism of the terrain.
Story/Plot: Brilliant storyline. I do wish the plot was a bit deeper and emotionally engaging but this game was still strides above the average FPS plotline out there.
Platform stability: This is by far the weakest area for this game. There were missions that were especially buggy - Regulators comes to mind. There was quirkiness with some of the terrain getting splotches of jittery light in the side of a hill or what not. I experienced many crash to desktop and system crashes. I also had a setback when the Autosave game became corrupt and I lost about an hour or two of gameplay.
Overall: Phenomenal and amazing. This game tackles a large chunk of graphical, sound, and game play limitations that are normally skipped over in games because they require too much work. I've read some complaints of using the Oblivion engine but I think this is a huge improvement over Oblivion and more interesting/fun. I do think some better story writing would make this truly priceless. Needs a few patches to round it out. Anxiously anticipating the sequel or expansions!
