Product Description You can be a part of the CSI team by reconstructing and sculpting a face with this incredible kit. Help solve the mystery of the face that once was. Why did this person die and who put him or her there' Use the included materials - plus your creativity - to reconstruct facial features, and learn how facial reconstruction helps to solve cases. Kit includes: plastic skull with facial accessories, clay modeling material for skin, reconstruction and sculpturing tools, molded eyeballs, inner nose and ears and set of molded pegs to give the skin depth. Eye color may vary.
Editorial Review Creative, inquisitive kids will actually say 'wow' out loud to this mix of science, puzzle, art, and fantasy, as they work painstakingly to mimic the sharp investigators of the popular crime show, "CSI". This facial reconstruction kit comes with a featureless plastic skull totally stripped of identity. It's secured on a sturdy platform for easy reconstruction, using two pounds of good quality modeling clay and four plastic sculpting tools, all included. There's also a rolling pin and platform for flattening out the clay for certain facial areas. The contours of the face come to life with each dab of clay, and with the addition of removable, plastic brown eyes, a nose, and frames and spaces for ears and lips that will need to be filled in. A detailed CSI instruction manual tells step-by-step how to create the figure, even creating hair and eyebrows. --Diane Beall

A True Crime February 21, 2008 EG Sparks My sister and I each purchased one of these heads a couple of Christmases ago and were eager to see how we would be with a combination between art and science. I expected a challenge, a long "project" for the weekend, but what I didn't expect was how little educational value the kit really had to offer.
First, the uniformity of the heads and pins. My sister and I were messing around as we are prone to doing and is required of any persons holding fake human heads in their hands, and in the midst of said fooling, we got the skulls mixed up. You would think that a male and female head wouldn't be very hard to tell apart when they're supposedly one victim or another, but come finishing time, we could only assume that we had gotten each other's kits, because neither of the heads looked like they were supposed to.
Second, the difficulty level and the reward for "pushing through." I'm an avid crafter, so believe me when I say that I'm willing to put in the hours for a worthwhile project. This kit has (on average) taken the better part of an entire weekend, sometimes longer, but the results are often lack-luster. In both attempts I've made with my sister, none of the completed faces have resembled the featured "victim" in the case-file. This in itself is dejecting for a would-be forensics fan, but add to it the guidebook's notion that making hair from the remaining clay is as simple as 1,2,3, and I can almost guarantee you that most children will give up or be greatly disappointed in their project in the end.
My sister and I have complete this kit twice each, and though we've had fun, it's not because of the results. (We've been slightly put-off by seeing the finished project.) If you want to practice your sculpting and spend your weekend doing something other than watching movies, I'd recommend the kit in a heartbeat. But if you're looking for something educational, you would probably be better suited by going to your local craft store and asking about their sculpting products. Otherwise, all you'll be learning is how much money the CSI franchise is willing to gyp the consumer of.
My daughter loved this... November 10, 2007 Amy (P Town, AZ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for my 11 year old daughter for Christmas. She thinks forensics is interesting and also enjoys art and this is a perfect combination of the two. It was very easy to do, she did it herself. If you wanted to do it again the modeling clay is very soft and you could do it again. A+ educational toy...
Great Toy November 5, 2007 hottiechoo (Houston, TX) I purchased this as a gift for my 10 yr old daughter who loves the hit show CSI. It took us about 30 mins to complete the head. The instructions were very easy and so was the clean up. It has been sitting out for about 3 weeks now and the clay is still soft, it never dryed up or got hard which is great. We can start all over again and change the features if we want to.
An Art Student Loves This! March 7, 2007 Alouette1 (USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm working of a BFA and I love, love, love this! It's not a toy-- it's a tool. I got it as a GAG gift at a majors party. I have thanked the giver time and time again for it, and taken it to classes where I work with kids. I don't mention CSI because I think it's a bit morbid, but when it comes to drawing a face, it helps to know how it's constructed and I get kids to LOOK at what people look like, and off of drawing generic symbols for mouths, eyes, noses and hair. This is a a great aid in teaching people how to see the underlying structor of a face and how it makes it look on the surface.
