Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Randy Newman's first studio album of all new material in nearly a decade is, by turns, hilarious, poignant and scathingly satirical. Harps and Angels often has an easy going Crescent City feel, with Newman on piano fronting a small combo and revealing, as Rolling Stone put it after the Carnegie Hall show, his serious love and study of the New Orleans piano tradition.

Album Description
Randy Newman's 2008 studio album titled Harps and Angels. Produced by Mitchell Froom and Lenny Waronker, it contains seven new songs and three updated versions of previously released songs.

5 out of 5 stars Randy's last Studio CD?   August 21, 2008

Harps and angels is another great randy newman CD, and no, I'm not one of randy's relatives. It took him 9 years to come up with 8 new songs, and reworked 2 more to make a complete album. That tells me this will probably be his last studio album. The 2 older tunes are 'laugh and be happy' which I love, and 'feels like home' originally on the faust CD. At first I didn't think feels like home fit into this collection, but it's still a nice song, though I like the faust version better. Another Gem is 'piece of the pie' A song that would have fit in nicely on the born again CD. Randy is a very funny cat, and alway's brings a smile to my face. Harp's and angels isn't randy's best, that belongs to good ol boys, sail away, little crimminals, 'bad love' is also one of his all time best, but this new one is pretty close to the top.

1 out of 5 stars good reviews must be coming from Randy Newmans relatives!   August 18, 2008

I liked Randy Newman's earlier work. This album is terrible. He must have spent a whole week putting it together. That includes the time to write the songs. It's really a shame. I had high hopes for this album.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Wait   August 18, 2008

My friend Pris and I saw Randy at Carnegie Hall two winter's back, and we were both slavering in antipation about this release. Well...Randy kept us slavering long enuff...now is the time to assess the wait...
was it worth it, Newman fans?

Aye Aye! Eye Eye!

All new songs...new songbook to add to the classics...every song a gem...

kudos to Randy and his producer for keepin' things under wraps for two years,,

it's a demarcation line for a talent that has never lost his song writing luster or uncanny ability to come up with a lyric that is entirely original...New Orleans roots shine through...

The quiet sarcasm is also evident..nothing heavy handed...he delivers the goods without a trace of rancor...

The best songmeister still standing...

Lonely at the top?

Mebbe, but Randy..you da gent!!

BEK

4 out of 5 stars Encore, encore. He spoke French. Tres Bien.   August 15, 2008

Randy Newman, king of mordant and satirical humor returns after nine years with his tenth album in 40 years, "Harps & Angels". Amazon should create a new application to allow for half stars, because I'm giving this four and a half stars. Here's why:

Newman is what pop music sorely needs. Someone with wit, sly observations, and the ability to write characterizations and tell stories from each character's perspective. Such is true with "Easy Street", "Korean Parents", "A Few Words In Defense Of Our Country" and most hilariously on "A Piece Of The Pie" where he ridicules John Mellencamp and Jackson Browne and Bono (three artists I also like).

No one is safe when Randy Newman releases a new album, and that's what also makes him so valuable. He is so politically incorrect at times, it's a fresh of breath air in a stale room of pop music. At 65, he puts all the posturing, moronic rappers and hip hoppers and country slop to shame.

On the other hand, Randy Newman can be very poignant, and honest with his personal life such as "Losing You" and "Feels Like Home". Few artists have the talent to be able to do this change up.

Here's hoping that Randy Newman gets his due this year and earns some Grammy nominations. "Harps & Angels" is certainly one of the best albums of 2008. Let's just hope he doesn't take another decade to make an album.

Also, as a side note, why has his back catalog been left un-remastered for so long? Isn't it time that "Randy Newman" (1968), "12 Songs" (1970), "Little Criminals" (1977), "Born Again" (1979), "Trouble In Paradise" (1983) and "Land Of Dreams" (1988) got the royal treatment?!!

5 out of 5 stars Prowling his constituency again   August 14, 2008

Randy's back...prowling his constituency again with laser wit, astringency and poignancy ; capturing the present landscape with magic two or three minute vignettes of musical and lyrical clarity, sophistication and depth....he's a National Treasure!!!
