Amazon.com Venus in Overdrive was recorded in a record 32 days by Springfield and Matt Bissonette, Springfield's long time bass player. According to Rick, "it is an album about love in all its forms, and since Venus is the goddess of love, it's called Venus in Overdrive. There is a lot of personal stuff in these songs but we have tried to craft them so they still have a universal voice. We are older, yet still teenagers, we have lost people we love and still love the people who are on our journey with us, we are angry at some of the crap in the world yet love our human failings."
The first single from Venus in Overdrive is "What's Victoria's Secret?" Rick says the title of the song "is one of those titles that was waiting to be written and we just got there first. Matt came up with it and we wrote the song while we were doing 5 nights of shows in Milwaukee. I had some recording gear brought into my hotel room and we wrote it there at the haunted Pfister hotel, room 804. It's basically about the sexualization of women and how we as males, want that, but also resist it and mainly need to connect to women as human beings. It's a dichotomy that most men feel I think."
Two songs on the record, "Saint Sahara" and "Oblivious," pay tribute to Sahara Aldridge, a young girl who frequently attended Rick's shows and whom the entire band came to love and who recently passed away. Rick explains that "Saint Sahara" "is about who Sahara was and how hard it was to have her leave. It's also a celebration and recognition of the people she affected in this world. Her mom said (before she died) that if I were to write a song about her daughter, could I make it a celebration and not something maudlin, so it's basically a song celebrating her great sprit. `Oblivious,' is the soul side of the song, `Saint Sahara,' what we all felt and how we dealt with it. It is sometimes so good to be numb to pain but life can't go on if you stay numb all the time. The song itself is about the denial of the finality of death, but it's still a love song."
As part of the promotional plan for the new album, Rick will be returning to "General Hospital" in July as Dr. Noah Drake and his alter ego rocker Eli Love. The storyline will reunite him with the characters of Robin, Patrick and Anna as well as allow him to perform the single, "What's Victoria's Secret?" Rick Springfield Photos

Rick At His Best August 21, 2008 phillygirlandy (Philadelphia, PA) "Venus in Overdrive", co-written/produced with band mate Matt Bissonette, is Rick at his best. I've never heard this Rick. Yes, he still has the same soulful voice, but he is VERY different from the Rick that sang "Jessie's Girl" back in the 1980s. Don't get me wrong, this CD has just as much rock and soul (guitar riffs, backbeat, bass) as all of his others, but every track is a revelation of reality in love, life, death, and war. Rick brings it all on and doesn't let -- or bring -- you down.
In reviews, I've seen many postings comparing the song "Jessie's Girl" to "What is Victoria's Secret?" but the mindset behind them is as different as night and day. This time around, Rick's gone from writing about men WANTING girls to writing about why men THINK they want girls. While the 80's Rick told you that "Love is All Right Tonight", he now reveals that love isn't tied up with a pretty ribbon. While he writes and sings about love, he's just as lost as the rest of us. This soul-searching introspection sets the tone for every track on the CD.
"Venus in Overdrive" proves that Rick is not some 80's "pop icon" looking to hang on to stardom by cranking out the same formula over and over again. If that was the case, he'd make more money in dinner theater. In my opinion, Rick has consistently proven that an artist can achieve longevity by changing his thinking in many aspects of life, have the guts to tell the whole world about it, and still make incredible music.
Great new CD! August 21, 2008 Poinciana Pelican (Florida) Love this new Rick Springfield album. I grew up as a teen listening to RS and loved so many of his songs; 20 years later, I introduced his old music to my 5 y/o son.....and he adores his old songs, too. So we were pleasantly surprised to find that RS was releasing this new CD, and so when we couldn't find it in a store (one cashier actually asked me if I was picking up film in the name of Rick Springfield when I asked if they had Rick Springfield "in".....that crashed my world when I realized they had no clue who he was)...Anyhow, I was thrilled that I actually LIKE the music of this new CD. There are some great songs on here...and they stay in your head just like the old ones tend to do. His voice sounds great, I love how they remind me of his old work, but are still a bit modern. My only complaint is that he swears a few times so I have to sing over him loudly so that my 5 y/o doesn't hear the "bad" words!
Totally worth the price...and if you are a RS fan, you will really enjoy listening to this new collection of songs.
Also, I do not typically leave F/B for things on Amazon I've purchased, but made the effort to do so with this CD.
Love me some Rick... August 20, 2008 D. Youngman (San Jose, CA) Been a fan of his for YEARS. This album is such a surprise (but then again not). It is very, very, very, good. The boy can still rock, sing and bring it all home. The songs about Sahara relate to a little girl who started out as a fan and became a close family friend. She was diagnosed with a tumor and recently passed away. What an impact she must have had on him and what an emotional album to pay her tribute. A must buy.
Rick's Best August 19, 2008 Andrea Vargo (philadelphia,pa) I've been an RS fan for a long time. In my opinion, he has more rock and roll in him than most of the artists out there today. All of his albums after Working Class Dog have shown that Rick is not some 80's "pop" icon looking to hang on to rock stardom. Each new release has shown Rick's growth as a human being and an artist. Today, that's rare. Venus in Overdrive is Rick's latest release, co-written/produced with bandmate Matt Bissonette, and has just as much rock and soul as all of his others. For me the soulful lyrics, his incredible voice, guitar skills, and the rock and roll beat of this album make it one of his best. The beat of every song will catch you first, but the lyrics are what get you (Rick and Matt, you truly make beautiful music together). I've had the CD for about a week and can't get the song "Victoria's Secret" out of my head. I was equally taken by his beautiful tribute "Oblivious" which is dedicated to a young girl (and Rick fan) who lost her battle with cancer a short time ago. His devotion to this child (ongoing Web site and live fund raisers for her care and personal visits -- see www.rickspringfield.com for details) and the shock of her death make this song almost too hard to hear. But its beauty will keep you playing it again and again. I strongly urge any one of Rick's fans who may have lost him along the way, or any other rock and roll music lover to pick this one up, you will not be sorry and you may even have to admit that Rick rocks everyone, not just the chicks like me who thought he was "so cute" back in the day.
MONEY WELL SPENT!!! August 15, 2008 J. GOODMAN (Enid, OK USA) If you are a fan of Rick Springfield, this CD is a must for your musical collection. I've really enjoyed listening to his music evolve over the years. "Karma" was my favorite, but I think that it has now been beaten. Every track on "Venus In Overdrive" is fantastic and sung from the heart. I love the passion in his voice on the song "She". Outstanding job Rick!!!! You continue to amaze me, and I'm so glad that you are still making music that we can all enjoy!!!
