Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This First Act VE591 Electric Guitar is a hot instrument with state-of-the-art sound. This custom-designed single cutaway Electric Guitar is expertly engineered to play directly through a stereo system, desktop recording console, mixing board, computer, headphones, or rock it old school through a Guitar Amplifier. This Guitar features a body shape designed in the First Act Studio For Artists custom shop. It is made of basswood for warm, meaty, resonant tone, and also has a well-balanced single cutaway with excellent high fret access. The Guitar has a maple, satin finished C-shaped neck with rosewood fingerboard. This provides a warm tone, solid feel, and great mid-range. The headstock is tilted with chrome die cast tuning machines. The Guitar also features First Act designed bridge, tailpiece, and string retainer for awesome sustain and distinct string tones and has a beautiful metallic platinum color with black body binding. The volume and tone controls are designed for distinct tone tweaks, and the Guitar features two Alnico 5 magnet vintage-style chrome bikini-clad humbucking pickups with crisp clean sound and warm distortion. This great Electric Guitar has a built-in pre-amp designed with our proprietary V-Stack analog modeling technology for organic, responsive, warm tone. No matter what you play through, it has awesome vintage tube amp tone. The Clean/Distortion switch goes from crystal clean to dirty rock distortion in an instant, and the Tone Shift is ideal for selecting alternate tone voicings for a broad range of sounds. This Guitar also includes a padded gig bag and 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, allowing you to plug into all devices. This wonderful Electric Guitar makes a great gift!

5 out of 5 stars Just superb   October 6, 2008

The first review here is a little cofusing so I'll try to clarify with my experience. I purchased this guitar through amazon with free shipping and could not be happier. Neck is well done, no issues whatsoever with quality control. Built in boost/OD is great for what it is inteded for. This guitar is made to be a great portable guitar you can plug into your car or computer stereo, or regular amp. The pickups are just fine and you can get some nice sounds from the effect/boosts.
This is not a $2000 Gibson or anything, but truth be told it's put together well, holds tuning, sounds great, feels great, and it's worth $400. I and my son who plays pick this one up often and noodle around.
The Gig bag it comes with fits like a glove and works well. It's a complete package and I use it when I'm going somewhere and need something to play for fun... that I don't have to worry about getting dinged or dropped.
Would I gig with this instrument? You bet I would if I needed to.
Get it.

You've seen the VW commercials (buy a car, get a guitar). But you also know that First Act guitars aren't quite "up there" with Fender, Gibson, ESP, etc. So here's the VW guitar, without the car, and at the current price, why not? Here's the deal; the guitar is an import, with decent weight and all real wood construction. One color. Decent finish and decent fit. Neck is slightly wide, chunky, decent fret job with no sharp edges. Black binding on neck and top of body. Wide, jumbo frets, decent leveling. Out of the box, I tuned it and it was playable. Tuners are typical generic, which could be upgraded. Like most import guitars, very dirty and dusty out of the box; needs a wipe down and I usually clean the fretboard with some denatured alcohol. Very sparkly and chromed out. Sound? Well, it's cool. I played it through an older Boogie and the clean tones do ring and sustain. The pre-amp does give it what is advertised, an analog boost/distortion. Remember the old distortion pedals? Not quite death metal distortion, but a nice-sounding, 70's rock distortion. Old school. Oh, and the best feature is the direct out to headphones, computer, stereo, etc, which gives the same "big" sound and doesn't sound like a toy when compressed. I bought this because of the price, and 'cause it's different. I don't gig, but I can't imagine it being that type of guitar. Don't wait. Get it from J&R. It's $10 more but these will sell out. Also, if you live in NY, Amazon will collect tax so it's worth paying $10 more just to get it.
