Product Description A busy inventor shrinks his kids to a quarter of an inch and throws them away in the trash by accident. Now their backyard has become a dangerous battleground as they face adversaries like a common ant a bee a sprinkler system and more. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 04/05/2005 Starring: Rick Moranis Marcia Strassman Run time: 93 minutes Rating: Pg Director: Joe Johnston
Amazon.com A deft balance between special effects, comedy, and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbor kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. A generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended), and entertaining outing. --Keith Simanton

A great classic! May 19, 2008 Darren (Colorado Springs, CO) I remember watching this movie when I was a kid, and loving every second of it! And, what do you know? I still do to this day!
Very creative story, great characters, all around good clean fun for everyone!
Good effects sans CGI March 20, 2008 Philip Rommel Ascalon (Philippines) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I watched this a lot of times but never watched the 2 sequels (Honey I Blew Up the Kid, Honey We Shrunk Ourselves) after this. Still this original entertains me everytime I view it. Special effects weren't bad in this 1989 film considering that CGI weren't used. Some scaling though needs improvement. Matt Frewer as the obnoxious neighbour delivered the funny parts well. You wouldn't go wrong with this Disney movie.
No widescreen version! March 19, 2008 Hee Chul Kwon (Ca, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Too sad. I have widescreen TV and this dvd is annoying.
It has only full screen format.
Magical January 10, 2008 J. Ronthi (Washington, DC USA) When I hear grown adults dog on this film, you gotta wonder about them. It is a kids film, yes, and clearly meant to be so. However, this goes far beyond the pale of normality within that genre. This was a first of its kind and well thought-out.
The kids all did such a fine job with their respective roles, better than the adults, really. All in all, I remember this film tapping my imagination the way no other film did of that era. Of course, I was nine years old, and it did what it was supposed to do.
When watching it now, I can still attest to its magic.
Recommended for the family.
great movie with funny and scary scenes March 25, 2007 i think this is a very cool movie. it has very scary scenes (like the scene with Antie and the scorpion-- almost made me cry...), and very funny scenes (like the one where the dog starts making rick spin on the rope-- that made me fall to the floor, it was so funny!!!)
all in all, i thought this was a very good movie. i give it a one million star rating!
