Product Description When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

Uhhh.... August 19, 2008 Harvey Raygun (Tucson, North America) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've only seen 30-word description of this book, but I believe that Franz Kafka is working his way out of the grave to protest this egregious and hackneyed rip-off of "The Metamorphosis". The author couldn't even change the name and type of insect from Kafka original dark story? What is this?
What a ride, like a giant roller coaster! July 27, 2008 Z. Maleki (Maine, USA) This is the first in the series, and it is hard to get past the first 3 chapters. HOWEVER, hang in there, folks. Just like a roller coaster ride, the ride (or shall I say the read) clankity clanks up the reading tracks, takes a few yanks on your mind at first, and then wooosh! Downhill, sideways, upside down. When some of my Gr.5 students started to read the book, they dropped out after the first 3 chapters. They found the conversations of the cockroaches and the Underlanders hard to follow. Don't stop at the cockroches, folks. Forge ahead. Ride the bats with the Underlanders! Take the plunge into the... ok, I won't give it all away. When I read the first 3 chapters aloud, my students got sucked into the book like Gregor got sucked into the underland, down the heatvent, down the sewers.... Then I started to read Chapter 4 and stopped....leaving the students to grapple for the book. Yes they did! And just when you think Gregor was safe again at the end of the book....look out! The next adventure loomed...which makes Book 2 in the series another must read! Warning: when you read this book, make a chart of who is who, their roles, and the settings. Once the action picks up you won't have time to do the charting, and you won't know what "hit ya" towards the end of the book. So, make those character charts at the start and refer to them as you read through the book. Stay focused, because it is one wild ride of an adventure! This series puts Journey to the Center of the Earth (movie, any version) to shame! It's all in the mind, the mind shaft...your imagination, stuff that can never get put on the movie screen in the right way... The 2nd book is even wilder! Oh boy!Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane (The Underland Chronicles, Book 2)
Roo's Review May 30, 2008 Roo (New Albany, Ohio) When I needed to pick a book for AR, I chose Gregor the Overlander because I like fictional fantasy. The book started out slow because it only focused on one character, Gregor , in his apartment. The story picked up when he fell into the underland. At this point, the book became more interesting because fantastical creaters were introduced, like giant cockroaches and a giant rat named Ripred. As Gregor finds out someone he has been looking for is somewhere in the underland, the story becomes cool because it moves along and is interesting because of all the strange creatures they come across.I would recomend this book to anyone who loves fantasy stories.
PCE Student Review April 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My favorite book is Gregor the Overlander. The author is Suzanne Collins, and this book is science fiction. My favorite character is Ripred. I like Ripred because he is very sarcastic. He is also an excellent fighter. Ripred also makes people sound stupid with his sarcasm. I love this book because there are unexpected twists and turns. Some characters have very dry senses of humor. I also love the gruesome battles. The quite interesting prophecies that I like to try to figure out. The Gregor the Overlander books are a great series. I like the authors writing style because it flows well, it's actiony and it keeps me hooked. I would recommend this book to fourth graders on.
overlander book is over my expectations February 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
GREGOR THE OVERLANDER is an outstaning book, wwith surprises around every corner.Seriosly, I could never guess what would happen next. This book will make you want to board up your air vents, and run in terror from every rat and spider you ever see. You will never see the world the same after reading this book for countless hours in your bed, on your couch, or wherever you like to read. Gregor-an eleven year old boy who lives in a cramped apartment with his mom, a confused grandmother, a two year old sister(nicknamed "Boots"),and a seven year old sister-is the main character. The story begins as Gregor and his sister Boots-the girl who brings humor to the book so no one gets too scared- are doing laundry in here apartment when Boots gets sucked into an air vent. Gregor tries to pull her out, but in an attempt, gets sucked in too. The two siblings are soon in some underground world called "the Underland". This world is full of blond haired violet eyed warriors, who help Gregor and his sister boots on their quest to find their missing father and fufill the Prophecy of Gray. The Underland is also full of spiders (spinners), and roaches(crawlers). There are also some really big bats(flyers),and some really evil rats. Sometimes the Underlanders dialog may be a little hard to understand because they have a language of their own. But it's nothing more than your simple "yoda talk". Suzzane collins has her own way to describe the underland too. She gives descriptions on how they get their water, why certian people ride on certian bats, who invented what, what things are made of, why they are made of what they made of, and sooooooo mush more. Read the book as soon as yu can because there are already more books in the serries, and more to come. Hope this review was helpful!
